“The Fall”: Chapter Five

Week. 5

A Sermon

This Sunday, Michael's friends were sitting with him. He wasn't making a lot of noise, learning his lesson from last week. The choir was singing Melodies From Heaven by Kirk Franklin. Even the children were singing along. After the choir, it was offering time, people walking to the front to give their offering or tithes. Something that always stood out to Michael was the minister who would pray before the offering. He would always ask, “Will a man rob God?” Thinking to himself, how could you rob God, that was a weird question to ask. As he was in thought, the girl with such pretty curls walked by. She smiled, waving hi. For the first time Michael was acting shy. He started drawing and writing a story of God's glory. While focused on what he was doing, not really paying attention to what was going on. The pastor on the pulpit was talking to the congregation. Then said, “Today Minister Saint will give us a sermon. Minister, please come up.” The church began clapping. Michael and his friends were shocked, they didn't know Michael's dad would be preaching. His attention was glued to the pulpit.

“Amen, amen. First I want to give honor to God, to let me speak to his people. Use me as you need, give me the words to preach.” Michael's sitting in the pews, giving his father all his attention.

“I want to talk to you members about the circle of life. Please go in your bible and go to John chapter 11 verse 25-26 and it reads ²⁵Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die, ²⁶and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” Thank you Lord for letting me read this word.” Everyone in the church said, “Amen.” His dad began saying, “My oldest son loves the movie Lion King and in this movie the father tries to explain to his son about the circle of life. I wondered if Simba would understand what his father was saying. Does anybody have any children?” A lot of the members raised their hands. “Like we all know, sometimes they don't understand what we are trying to teach them when they're young.”

“Amen.” Michael heard members agreeing with his father. It was amazing seeing his father on the pulpit. He had everyone's attention.

“We learned Simba had to go through things before he had any understanding of what his father was saying.”

Michael was amazed, his father using Lion King as a lesson.

“When you're older sometimes we understand that after going through somethings we find ourselves looking in the stars for God and when we really need him, he appears. Asking if we forgot him. My son was watching the animation and missed the message.”

The choir got up and started singing at a low tone.

“He's here, does anybody need God? Begin new, you've been in this world and tired of what it has offered.” Members standing up. Michael saw how many people looked like they loved his fathers message. Brandon and David, were saying how much they liked his dad's preaching. Michael found himself proud of his father. Walking down the aisle Michael saw the mother of the girl with curly hair. She had tears falling down her cheek. Saying she was ready for something different, to be a better mother for her children. My father prayed for her. At that moment she decided to be a member of our church. A testimony she made, saying she's been looking for a church. She came a few times but this message made her feel she was home. Then our pastor came on the pulpit to say some last minute words.

“What a message amen.” Everyone repeated by saying, “Amen.” He was honored that this woman wanted to join the church. She said, “She was tired of being in the world and the Word touched her.” The pastor agreed and had some ladies from the church bring her in the back. Before she left, her daughters followed behind, Michael saw the girl with the curls smile.
