“The Fall”: Chapter Two
Week. 2
It's Time To Eat
She replied by saying, “Hi.”
Michael was getting more nervous handing her the neatly folded paper. Then he walked away. As he was walking back to his seat, both of his friends ran into him, saying their parents were cool with them going.
Michael looked in the back of the church, she had the paper unfolded. Her older sister was looking at the question, he saw them smiling. Then he heard his mother calling his name. Michael looked at his friends then said, “Let's go.” All three of them hurried to find his mother. She was holding Isaac's hand. Michael told her Brandon's and David's parents said it was okay to eat with them. Michael's mother said she was going to talk to their mother's before they leave. His father was talking to the ministers and deacons. Brandon's dad was a minister and David's dad was a deacon.
As some time passed fewer people were in the church. Michael again started daydreaming on what his church would look like. His grandfather was a pastor, father a minister, and his uncle was a minister too. Would his church be grand, or small. Then he heard Brandon's dad ask, “What did you boys think of the word?” All the boys looked at each other, then together they said, “It was good.” Michael's father stared at his son and asked, “What did you learn?” As he smiled, Michael answered by saying, “God will always be there.” The boys nodded in approval remembering the pastor saying that at some time in the service. The parents laughed and continued their conversation. Michael's dad asked, “Well y'all ready to eat?” All the parents agreed and they left the church.
They were heading to a buffet where a lot of the members go. “I'm going to eat so much.” Said David. Brandon laughed saying, “When we go to the buffet you always eat a lot.” All the boys were laughing. Gospel music was playing in the car. Stomp by Kirk Franklin was on. Michael and his friends were singing along. When they got to the restaurant, all could see the long line out the door. Michael exhaled in annoyance.
“How long is it going to take?”
Michael's mother turned around and looked at her son then said, “Don't you start.” Michael started looking out the window, knowing he didn't want to get into trouble. As he was looking, he saw the girl and her sisters walking in the buffet. Her mother was talking to a few of the members. He started to get excited. Brandon asked Michael what he was going to eat. David and Brandon waited for an answer. “Michael!” Finally out of his trance, he looked at his friends. They were staring at him. Michael was confused, asking, “What's up?” Brandon asked again, “What are you going to eat?” Michael smiled, answering him saying, “I want mac and cheese, ham, chicken and maybe some pizza.” David interrupted saying, “And a lot of bread.” They started laughing. Then Michael's mom said, “Don't forget your vegetables.” Michael stopped laughing replying, “Yes ma'am.”
Remembering the girl, he started smiling again. Wondering if she was thinking about him. They got out of the car. A lot of the church members were out to eat at the buffet, talking about the service or how good the pastor preached. Michael heard one of the members talking to his dad about the pastor's age and how old he was getting. He asked his father, “How long do you think he has left?” My father looked at him and didn't give him an answer. Since there was a long line to get in the restaurant, the children played to waste time.
“Man, I can't believe we have to go back to church.” Michael replied to Brandon, “Yeah, I wish we could've gone back home.” David agreed with both of his friends then saying, “I can't wait to eat.” Both of his friends agreed saying, “Me too.” They were hungry from being at church all day. Michael's mother called the boys. It's time to go. Michael came running followed by his friends. As his family walked in, Michael saw the girl smiling at him.
